She loved the wilderness. She lived the wilderness. She was tired of the wilderness. There was no way back, not without erasing all she had done. There was only a way forward, though it seemed instead like a way down. She knew this was the way of things, and so she descended. Through grief and redemption, she descended. Through denial and realization, she descended. Through pain and triumph, she descended. And when she could go no further, she found herself where she had begun, except now the town lay directly in front of her, gates flung wide. She steeled herself to tell the people that the time had come, and walked backwards into her destiny.
